Generating energy for a city can be a great challenge, even more so when dealing with the need to sustain energy demand in high season periods, as happens in main tourist cities. A reliable power source is a critical element for these cities to meet the energy demands during certain seasonal periods. In order to be prepared for it, the city of Paraty, located in Brazil, is increasing its substation capacity by another 7.5MVA.
The energy will be provided by Geraforte gensets and they have selected WEG as the alternators supplier for this project. Also, it is a result of WEG experience in power generation business that has already produced over 40 MW of power in alternators.
The project consists of 10 gensets of 750 kVA each and five of them are already under operation. One of the highlights of the project is the installation of the gensets which is inside 40-foot super acoustic containers, over 12 meters long and eight tons each.
Recognized as a tourist destination for thousands of people every year, the city of Paraty stands out nationally for its historical and cultural heritage, will now be more prepared to receive tourists with the partnership of the expertise of WEG and Geraforte solutions.

Water is an indispensable resource for life and although it is a natural source, to reach people it requires efficient infrastructure and equipment. Concerned about this, Ruhrpumpen, one of the main manufacturers of pump systems in the world, chose WEG as equipment supplier to the named Ramal do Agreste project, which will take water to about 70 municipalities in the state of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil.
This water infrastructure is an extension of the São Francisco River Integration project with the Northeastern Hydrographic Basins. The main objective is to capture water from the Barro Branco dam, in the municipality of Sertânia and drain it into the Ipojuca reservoir, in the municipality of Arcoverde, in Brazil.
To drive the centrifugal pumps that will be installed at the pumping station, WEG is supplying three M mine slip ring motors, frame size 900, 8,000 kW, 13,800 V with special features such as the flexibility of their electrical and mechanical design. They are versatile motors that allow different configurations to suit different applications. In addition, the use of slip ring motors presents a low starting current of the motors, close to the nominal, thus minimizing the voltage drop, optimizing the substation and, consequently, reducing investments in the electrical installation.
By choosing the WEG M line motors, Ruhrpumpen invests in project reliability that will benefit around 2.2 million people, in addition to contributing to the development of the region. For WEG, being a key supplier for this project strengthens the company’s image as an important player in the Water segment and includes another supply reference in the market.

On the night of October 20, 2021, WEG received the award for best company in the capital goods and electronics sector in the Exame´s Biggest and Best Directory. The award is the result of a survey conducted by financial magazine Exame, in partnership with Ibmec, which considers economic and financial data from 2020. The best companies identified in 18 economy sectors stand out for their success achieved while conducting their business and for positively impacting the Brazilian economy.
In addition to the traditional evaluation criteria which includes accounting results, growth within the segment over the past five years, governance, social and environmental responsibility, this year Exame has also considered companies that had the ability to adapt themselves to the pandemic crisis and that are aligned with the new market challenges.
“Upon a scenario of major business volatility and substantial limitations imposed by the pandemic, in 2020 WEG achieved great economic performance with revenue growth of over 30%, in addition to participating in different initiatives to minimize the pandemic impact on people’s lives. One of the initiatives implemented by WEG consisted of factory rearrangement to allow the manufacture of 1000 medical ventilators, which certainly supported the treatment of many infected people. I thank Exame for the recognition, and I extend my congratulation to our over 36 thousand employees for this achievement upon so many challenges”, says WEG´s CEO, Harry Schmelzer Jr.
